Waves of Words Literary Magazine

This week, I was ecstatic to see my first Christian poem (or at least, a poem that's obviously Christian; all of my work is influenced by God and my faith experiences in some way) published in Waves of Words Literary Magazine's latest issue, Issue 3: Relationships and Revelations (the intricacies of Christian relationships and their uniqueness).

The included poem (shown and copied below) is a heart's cry for me often in moments of weakness, doubt, and struggle. If you know these things well, I hope this poem helps you feel less alone in it.

My Prayer is a Simple One
Sophia Conway

I threw myself upon Mount Sinai

and demanded answers for my shame.

This pain

that burns within me is often stronger than

the peace I know exists. I want to

know what it is to feel truly free, to be

burdened with love while weightless in fear.

I want you to answer me

From the storm around

in a whisper as I cover

my face too,

For my soul to be fed by ravens in a desert

place where hope has died. To fly with

eagle wings and outrun the world with

strength only of you.

I don’t want to understand. Keep

your revelation

such knowledge is too glorious

for me. My shoulders are too small for

glory. But

give me a pure heart and show me

your face

so that I can find the courage to

finish this race

and hear you say,

“Well done”.

The Bible School Student inside of me (thank you, Torchbearers!) created a list of references to this poem which weren't included in the WoW issue publication, but I want to share them here as it's important to me that this poem be seen through the scriptural lens it was written. Hopefully, the references are obvious, but in case they are not, here's a list where you can find the different stories, words, and imagery from the Bible: (in order of appearance in the poem).

  • John 14:27
