Insights | Christmas Cards for Lonely Seniors
It's been five years since I started the initiative to hand-write Christmas cards to local seniors in the Oceanside area of Vancouver Island so I was excited to have the opportunity to talk to local reporter, Kevin Forsyth, to reflect on how the effort has grown and celebrate those involved.
If you've recently read my article for Loving is Moving Magazine, you'll know that I love writing cards. I love writing altogether; from poetry to books to Christmas cards! Having been writing to incarcerated individuals for the past 11 years, writing to lonely and isolated seniors was a natural leap. It does feel a lot different though because even though the goal is the same (bringing comfort and sharing love), the cards for seniors aren't something I do by myself. About 100 women from our church get involved every year and help write the cards. This year some of them even involved their children, husbands, neighbours, and friends! It's impossible to know exactly how many were involved in the effort but I'm enormously grateful to those who did!
I'm excited to involve my son in the initiative in future and use it as an opportunity to teach him of the importance of remember those in need and taking action to help.
A BIG thank you to Kevin Forsyth and the women of Oceanside Community Church! I'm excited to see how this grows even more in future.
